Windows must be manually activated if you’re logged in with a local account. Since the release of the Windows 10 Iversary Update, the device key is gone from being physically connected to your computer.

Are my Microsoft Account and my Windows Licence Connected?

Normally, a Windows licence can be linked to certain devices that you activate it on, rather than being connected to a single Corporate account and Link a Windows License to a Microsoft Account.

A Microsoft account can be connected to your licence starting with Windows 10 though. When installing again or upgrading hardware, this might help activate and migrate your licence to a new device.

How can I Find Out if the Licence for Windows is Transferable?

Windows licences might be transferrable or nontransferable depending on the kind of licence you bought. Microsoft offers three different licence categories: retail, OEM, and business licences. Retail licences can typically be moved from a single system to another; this is true of them.

OEM licences are supplied preinstalled on computers bought either from the manufacturer or a reseller; they are bound to the machine in question they have been put on and are not transferable.

Volume licences are often used by businesses and organisations rather than by individuals. The transferability of this licence type may be subject to additional terms and conditions that are not applicable to individual retail purchases.

In the past, to enable their Microsoft account, people who use Windows with local accounts had to manually enter a product key.

The activation procedure is now considerably simpler, though. Despite entering your product key, Windows can be reinstalled.
